Tarot and Kabbalah: The Minor Arcana Brought to Light on the Tree of Life

Ellen Goldberg

The tarot is a river of Hermetic wisdom into which streams of Kabbalah, alchemy, and astrology have flowed. This evening workshop will center on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, a symbol at the heart of Western mysticism. United by the Law of Correspondence, the study of the Tree of Life illuminates the meaning and use of the tarot.

Although often misunderstood, the 56 cards of the minor arcana translate the macrocosmic forces portrayed in the major trump cards into the panorama of everyday life. An understanding of the 10 Sefirot of the Tree of Life gives a grounded meaning to the “pip” cards (the ace through 10 card) of each suit, as well as to the four court cards, thus providing a solid vocabulary with which to understand our daily experiences as the transformative processes they really are.

We will also look at some of the Kabbalistic themes reflected in the tarot, such as the healing of the world through the restoration of balance between the masculine and feminine.

Students of all levels can enjoy this presentation, which will include learning a simple yet profound Kabalistic reading for self-reflection.

Note: The Rider-Waite deck will be used for discussion, but the material will apply to any favorite deck you wish to bring.
