On Taste — Drink & Think
Taste has always been more than preference. It is currency, class signal, moral grammar, and—increasingly—identity itself.
But something has shifted. In an era of aesthetic micro-movements, algorithmic curation, and the permanent performance of the self, taste has transformed from a private code into a public sport. And the stakes have never felt higher.
Join us for a session of conversation at the intersection of philosophy, sociology, and culture. Together, we’ll interrogate:
The Power Dynamic: Is taste something you cultivate, or something that cultivates you? Is it genuine sensibility, or a power move dressed up as pleasure?
The Modern Trap: What does it mean that even opting out of taste has become its own aesthetic position?
The Algorithmic Self: How does taste sort, discipline, and perform us back to ourselves—and does it still hold meaning when everyone has a mood board?

The Premise: Taste has shifted from a private signal—the books on your coffee table, the records by your player—to a performative, algorithmically broadcast design. Expanding on Bourdieu’s theory of taste as a social weapon, this piece argues that what was once implicit has become explicit, weaponized, and hyper-accelerated.
Beyond the philosophy of Hume and Kant, modern aesthetic movements aren't just about what looks good. They are about staking claims that are deeply political, moral, and metaphysical. We now build our identities in public, using taste as the scaffolding, while everyone is watching.
