Thalia Docs: Zuzana-Music Is Life

Recalling a life of love, tyranny and triumph, Zuzana Ruzickova endured forty years of persecution in Czechoslovakia for refusing to join the Communist Party, while becoming a legendary harpsichordist and interpreter of Bach around the world. “I thought this must be some kind of a joke,” she says of Communists replacing Nazis after the war. “I was so wrapped up in my music, I didn’t care about politics; which was a great mistake of course.” As a teenager Zuzana was imprisoned in Terezin, Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, but clung to Bach as proof that ‘a higher order making sense of life’ exists. In 1956 she became known as ‘the Jew who brought Bach back to Germany,’ when she won the Munich Competition. Living under Communist surveillance between 1948-89, Zuzana performed worldwide, and won scores of awards, producing over a hundred recordings. She is the only person in the world to record all the keyboard works of Bach, re-released by Warner Music on 20-CD’s in 2016.
