The 2017 Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History at the New-York Historical Society

We are pleased to announce Cathal J. Nolan, author of The Allure of Battle: A History of How Wars Have Been Won and Lost, as the 2017 winner of the Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History at the New-York Historical Society. Jointly administered by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the New-York Historical Society, this award seeks to engage public discourse in wartime studies, international relations, and diplomacy.

In conversation with Andrew Roberts, Chair of the 2017 Judging Committee for the Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History at the New-York Historical Society, author and historian Cathal J. Nolan surveys military leaders from Alexander the Great to Napoleon and revisits battles throughout history that were considered “decisive” victories. From the Battle of Marathon in ancient Greece to the Battle of Stalingrad in World War II, Nolan explores how these storied conflicts fit into the broader narrative of the major wars in which they were fought. Click here to read the full press release.

Cathal J. Nolan is Associate Professor of History and Executive Director of the International History Institute at Boston University. Andrew Roberts (moderator) is Roger and Martha Mertz Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and the author of Churchill: Walking with Destiny.
