We are delighted to announce Andrew Lambert, author of Seapower States: Maritime Culture, Continental Empires and the Conflict That Made the Modern World (Yale University Press), as the winner of the 2018 Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History at the New-York Historical Society. Jointly administered by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the New-York Historical Society, this award seeks to engage public discourse in wartime studies, international relations, and diplomacy.

Despite their diminutive geographic size, Athens, Carthage, Venice, the Dutch Republic, and Britain wrought enormous geopolitical, cultural, and economic power during their respective apexes. Historian Andrew Lambert assesses the rise and eventual decline of these small yet influential seapowers and how their maritime identities strengthened their states and provided them an edge over their continental rivals. In a conversation with Andrew Roberts, Chair of the 2018 Judging Committee for the Prize, Dr. Lambert examines the fascinating history of these nation-states and how their trajectories continue to resonate in contemporary times as the U.S., China, and others vie for global dominance. Click here to read the full press release.

Andrew Lambert is Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London, and Director of the Laughton Naval History Unit. Andrew Roberts (moderator) is Roger and Martha Mertz Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, Distinguished Lehrman Fellow and the New-York Historical Society, and the author of Churchill: Walking with Destiny.
