The Cake General | Tårtgeneralen Wayward Endeavors: Comedies From the North

Based on a true story, the directorial debut of popular Swedish personalities Filip and Fredrik is an outrageous, unconventional comedy set in the 1980s about an eccentric villager who decides to put his sleepy hamlet on the map by assembling the world’s longest layer cake.

When in 1984 the small town of Koping is named “the most boring town in Sweden” by the popular television show Rekord-Magazinet, resident Hasse Pettersson (Mikael Perssbrandt, The Hobbit) refuses to allow his new home to become the subject of a national joke, and sets off on a mission to drum up some attention-grabbing excitement by creating the world’s largest sandwich cake. As Hasse puts aside drinking habits and financial struggles to fulfill his goal, he also begins to find that the potential for success gives his life a much-needed sense of purpose. And as his community begins to band around him, the citizens of Koping show that there is just as much value to be found in those who live outside the boundaries of what is considered conventional — and in their relentless ability to achieve a meaningful goal, no matter how absurd it may seem. Directed by Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson (Sweden, 2018)
