The Enduring Legacy of Attica

Humanities New York (HNY) invites you to join us and the Correctional Association of New York (CANY) for a conversation with historian Heather Ann Thompson, author of Blood in the Water, the Pulitzer-prize winning history of the 1971 Attica Prison uprising and its lasting impact. Thompson’s book, the definitive examination of this turbulent moment in New York history, is also an excellent prompt for encouraging sober-minded thinking about the ripple effect of incarceration in American society.

This event is the first in a series of HNY engagements with the New York prison ecosystem, a project that we hope will foster empathy for currently and formerly incarcerated people and their families. Thompson will speak with Martha King, CANY board member; Tyrrell Muhammad, CANY Monitoring Associate; and Jose Saldana, Director, Release Aging People in Prison Campaign.

About CANY

For 175 years, CANY has been the only independent organization in New York with authority under state law to monitor prisons and report their findings to the legislature and the broader public. In addition to carrying out this unique mandate through onsite prison monitoring visits, they confidentially communicate with incarcerated people about their experiences through the mail, one-on-one interviews, and collect phone calls. CANY provides access that creates a platform for people inside prison to participate in and shape the public debate.
