The Fabric of Crime

Join The National Arts Club for a glimpse into how 19th and early 20th century citizens, criminals, and police used dress to commit and detect crime, and how the fabric of everyday life could be fashioned into weapons, disguises, and serve as evidence in criminal trials. Today, many television series depict forensic experts identifying victims or convicting criminals based on a few threads, a single footprint, or a bloodstained shirt.

Dr. Alison Matthews David is a historian of dress and textiles. Her work intersects with multiple areas including medical history, criminology, and occupational health. She is the author of Fashion Victims: The Dangers of Dress Past and Present (Bloomsbury Visual Arts).
