‘The Gentlemen Art Collectors of the Gilded Age’ Webinar
Join New York Adventure Club as we travel back in time to the late 19th century to explore the lives and artistic legacies of a handful of American men who became some of the world’s preeminent art collectors.
Led by art historian, appraiser, and writer Lynn Villency Cohen, our look at America’s Gilded Age gentlemen movers & shakers in the art world will include:
- An overview of the major gentlemen collectors of the 19th century, including Alexander Turney Stewart, William Henry Vanderbilt, and Jay Gould
- A look at the artists, subjects, and styles of the paintings these collectors favored, from Bouguereau and Gerome to Meissonier and Bonheur
- The motivations in assembling such immaculate art collections, which ranged from a genuine appreciation of certain artistic elements to oversized egos (and wallets)
- The fate of these grand collections after their owners’ passing
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Lynn — any and all questions about these gentlemen art collectors are welcomed and encouraged!
