In 1943, architect Frank Lloyd Wright was asked to create “a temple of spirit” to house the Guggenheim Museum’s growing art collection — 16 years later, Wright’s building was completed, one that not only housed art, but was art itself…a living, breathing organism with a seemingly endless amount of depth and character, the ultimate testament to architectural creativity in a city skyline steeped in rectangular monotony. This is the story of one of the world’s most fascinating buildings, and architects, of the 20th century.

About Sharon

Sharon Vatsky supervises programming for youth audiences and oversees the development of curriculum materials for Guggenheim exhibitions. She works closely with teachers to identify ways in which the museum can serve as a resource for classroom learning, and facilitates professional development programs locally, nationally and internationally.

From 1990 – 2000 she served as Curator of Education at the Queens Museum of Art.  In that position she formulated programming for dozens of exhibitions of modern and contemporary art for audiences of all ages.

Vatsky teaches graduate courses in Museum Education at New York University and Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Other professional experience includes teaching drawing, painting, art history and arts education at several colleges and universities. She is the author of Museum Gallery Experiences: A Handbook, (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018) for the American Alliance of Museums.

She holds graduate degrees in art from State University New York, Albany, Hartford Art School and an undergraduate degree from New York University and has completed course credits in the doctoral program in Art and Art Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.  She is the 2008 recipient of the Charles Marshall Robertson Award presented annually to an educator “who has made a significant contribution to art education” and serves on the board of directors of Bronx Art Space.
