The Inside Outsider: Reconstructing the Black American Narrative

Please join Open Society’s Culture and Art program for a talk with documentary photographers Devin Allen and Ruddy RoyeAs storytellers working on the frontlines of protest, Allen and Roye will explore the complexities of creating new narratives and combating the misrepresentation of Black communities—and their resistance—with both depth and nuance.

Moderated by the Magnum Foundation’s Noelle Flores Théard, this conversation will address the photographers’ distinct approaches to creating imagery produced by and for the Black community—in the United States and throughout the world. Uniquely informed by their distinct geographic contexts and generational experiences, the photographers will explore their responsibilities as documentarians and their approaches to publishing their work and engaging audiences.

This event will provide live American Sign Language interpretation.
