While the early 20th century saw fanciful architectural styles like Art Deco and Expressionist take hold around the world, the mid 20th century saw the rise of counter styles that were simpler and more refined in nature. Enter the International Style — though it stripped buildings of all their decor, it allowed for commissioned independent fine artists to create incredible free-standing or wall-mounted works of art. It’s time to dive into one of the most interesting, and unorthodox, art collaborations in the design world.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the fascinating collaborations of fine artists and architectural firms surrounding the International Style.
Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this virtual journey around NYC will include:
- A look at buildings designed in the International Style by leading modern architectural firms like Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Mies van der Rohe, and Wallace Harrison
- The artists whose pieces complimented the design movement including Marc Chagall, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, and Isamu Noguchi
- How the inspiration from the Bauhaus School, theater and modern dance, and a new interest in physical exploration of art within a spatial environment, all led to amazing public art spaces
- How friendships between architects, museum professionals, and artists helped in the creation of these great projects
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions about the art and architecture associated with the International Style are welcomed and encouraged!
