The Portrait in Contemporary Photography

Carol Armstrong (Yale University) examines the place of portraiture in contemporary photography on a global stage. Looking at changing concepts of personhood against the historical background of portraiture in painting and other traditional mediums, this lecture tracks the shift to photographic portraiture in the 19th century, and the further shift in photography, in the 1970s and 1980s, toward large-scale imagery and references to art history.
