The Science and Colours of Human Expression II

The Making and Knowing Project (a Research Cluster within the Center for Science and Society) has partnered with the Sato Sakura Gallery to present a compelling look into the intersection of human expression in art and our understanding of the natural world.

Tianna Uchacz, Tillmann Taape, and Naomi Rosenkranz join in conversation with artist and author Michael Price and Sato Sakura directors about the value of reconstructing historical techniques for contemporary art making and scholarship. Exemplified in the mineral pigments employed by the classical Japanese Nihonga painters exhibited at Sato Sakura Gallery, this panel discussion seeks to highlight how knowledge of natural materials has been essential to methods of artistic expression since early human history, and it continues to inform artistic practice to this day. This event is sponsored by Sato Sakura Gallery and was made possible by the generous support of ‘The Making and Knowing Project,’ an initiative within The Center for Science and Society at Columbia University, and author Michael Price.
