The Science of Love in the Time of Online Dating

As more and more of us turn to websites and apps to find our “match,” we are moving into uncharted territory. Where we once had to rely on meeting people in real life (IRL), we can now select boxes, leading to an array of potential partners. This talk will take a look at the field of relationship science. We will discuss basic human needs, as well as factors of interpersonal attraction. In addition, we will learn a technique to estimate the size of our dating pool, as well as share some take-home tips to enhance our existing relationships.

Dr. Marisa Cohen is a psychology professor and a relationship scientist and coach. Her relationship research focuses primarily on peoples’ perceptions of first date success and consensual non-monogamy. She is the author of From First Kiss to Forever: A Scientific Approach to Love and “Finding Love: The Scientific Take,” a Psychology Today blog. In addition, she is the co-founder of the Self-Awareness and Bonding Lab, a lab that examines love from a scientific perspective.
