Representing New York in Washington has never been simple — and, at a time when New York votes overwhelmingly Democratic, but both houses of Congress and the presidency are controlled by Republicans and the country as a whole is deeply divided, it’s more complicated than ever.
To discuss how they seek, in this environment, to protect the interest of the state and its citizens, Tom Suozzi (D-NY-3), Mike Lawler (R-NY-17) and Dan Goldman (D-NY-10) join us to open the fall season of The State of New York, 92NY’s signature series on the issues shaping the city and state’s future.
These Congressmen are navigating a difficult political environment, and their conversation promises an unfiltered look at the fault lines in national politics — and how they hit home for New Yorkers.
Among the topics on the table:
What the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” means for New York taxpayers, New Yorkers who rely on government support for food and medical care and the fiscal health of New York City and New York State What changes to immigration policy and enforcement mean for New York’s significant immigrant population and the state’s economy What the polarization, not just in the halls of the Capitol, but across the state and country, mean for the future of our democracy and our democratic system; and Much, much moreIn the process, our panelists will seek to answer the larger question: What does it mean to represent a deep-blue state in a deep-red federal government? Can New York’s gain traction in a political context in which our national leaders appear to have very different priorities? And how much influence does New York really have over the federal policies shaping its future?
This conversation, moderated by 92NY CEO Seth Pinsky, offers a candid, timely look at how politics in Washington directly affect life in New York, and how two very different lawmakers are trying to make themselves heard in an increasingly complex national landscape.
