The Wayward Girl: An Evening with Liv Ullmann

In celebration of Liv Ullmann, recipient of the 2019 ASF Gold Medal, Scandinavia House presents two special evenings with the acclaimed actress and director, followed by a retrospective of her roles and work with leading auteurs.

At tonight’s opening event, Jan Erik Holst and Liv Ullmann will discuss her life and career on screen, stage, and behind the camera, as well as her first leading role as an actress in The Wayward Girl.

In this 1959 film directed by Edith Carlmar, Ullmann starred as the unruly young Gerd, who runs away with her middle-class boyfriend Anders to live in the countryside after facing his family’s disapproval. Secluded in a cottage in the woods, the relationship between the two blossoms, creating an isolated idyll. But when a stranger arrives unexpectedly and interrupts their routine, a love triangle threatens to tear them apart.

A screening of the film will follow the discussion with Holst and Ullmann.
