The ancient city of Thebes was a major Greek city-state whose rich mythical repertoire was co-opted by Athenians rather than preserved for its own sake or in its own right. In the fifth century BCE, Thebes sided with Persia in the Greek-Persian Wars, and Thebes became a byword for treachery. In the fourth century BCE, it was actually obliterated by Alexander the Great and ceased to exist.
Bringing Thebes back to life will be Dr. Paul Cartledge, who has taught ancient Greek culture at Cambridge University and has published extensively on Greek history.
