On this tour, Woolworth Building expert Ed Welter takes you beyond a traditional architectural experience and into a broader exploration of American ambition, commerce, inequality, innovation, and reinvention. You’ll use the building as a starting point for examining retail history, urban development, the civil rights movement, inherited wealth, technology, and New York’s changing place in the world. 

Designed by Cass Gilbert and completed in 1913, the soaring Gothic tower became the tallest building in the world, financed by the fortune Frank W. Woolworth built through his five-and-dime stores.

You’ll explore the magnificent lobby, historic vault, engineering innovations, and symbolism embedded in the building’s stained glass, mosaics, and terracotta.

Along the way, you’ll discover how the building parallels more than a century of American history. Through Woolworth’s rise from store clerk to retail titan, the segregation of the company’s lunch counters and the protests that helped transform the civil rights movement, the glamour and decline of inherited wealth, and the building’s connections to technology, war, and 9/11, you’ll see how one skyscraper opens onto a much larger American story.

Your experience concludes on the rarely opened 26th floor, where Gothic arches, gargoyles, and richly colored terracotta appear just beyond the windows, with City Hall Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Lower Manhattan below.
