Tony Award-Winning Playwright David Henry Hwang & Bill Russell Discussion

Culture Connection at Queens Public Library presents an evening of conversation and Q&A with David Henry Hwang, moderated by Bill Russell: two major American dramatists. Described by the New York Times as “a true original” and by Time Magazine as “the first important dramatist of American public life since Arthur Miller,” David Henry Hwang is best known as the Tony Award-winning author of M. Butterfly.

His prolific career spans theater, opera, film, and television: David Henry Hwang is America’s most-produced living opera librettist; since 2015, he has been a writer and consulting producer for the Golden Globe-winning TV series The Affair; and is currently writing the live-action musical feature adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Disney Studios. His new play with music, Soft Power, co-created with composer Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home), is currently playing at the Public Theater.

Bill Russell is an internationally produced author and director of musicals. He received Tony Award nominations for his book and lyrics for Side Show. He co-wrote the book and lyrics for Pageant which he also directed numerous times. Elegies for AngelsPunks, and Raging Queens (author book and lyrics) has been performed around the world. Two new musicals have recently enjoyed world premieres: Brave New World, for which he wrote the lyrics, and Unexpected Joy, for which he wrote the book and lyrics.
