Tour | Shaping Our City: Starting Up – Birth of the Skyscraper

Shaping Our City is a more or less chronological series devoted to the history and development of architecture in New York City.

WITH MATT POSTAL

The former financial canyons of Wall Street contain many distinguished early high-rise structures. From the 280-foot spire of Trinity Church to Chambers Street, join architectural historian Matt Postal and view late 19th and early 20th century Gothic, Romanesque, and Renaissance Revival designs, including twin skyscrapers by Francis Kimball, called the “father” of the skyscraper at the time of his death, the controversial Equitable Building, the soaring Woolworth Building and Liberty Tower – one of Manhattan’s first office buildings converted to residential use.
