Why Unions Still Matter!

This acclaimed talk by Labor Educator, Diane Thomas-Holladay, examines the relevance of unions in the 21st Century and the role unions have in building America’s future. Why Unions Still Matter, is an informative and enlightening presentation, developed by the Labor Education Program of the University of Arkansas Little Rock, in conjunction with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) and makes the case that strong unions are an essential component of a strong and stable economy.

Diane Thomas-Holladay is a long-time labor educator, teaching in a range of areas, including labor and employment law, grievance handling and arbitration, collective bargaining, leadership, labor history, and political economics. Working directly with stewards, officers, and negotiating and grievance committees, Diane teaches throughout the state of Arkansas, and with unions at the regional and national levels. She also teaches senior level and graduate classes in industrial relations for the UA Little Rock College of Business. She is an associate member of the United Steelworkers, and a past member of the American Federation of Teachers. She has a BA in Humanities Pre- Law and an MA in Labor and Industrial Relations from Michigan State University.

“We are union and proud members of organized labor. Every day on our jobs in our industry the reason for being union is reinforced. As craftsmen and professionals we enjoy a standard of living and protection under our contracts due to our union, yet everyday unions and their members are under attack. While corporate profits and executive salaries soar, American workers face disappearing pensions, increased hours and declining wages. IATSE members who have seen this presentation have given it great reviews and say that it explains our history and invigorates workers to be more involved in their locals and in the Union movement.”
