Uptown at Night returns to the Members’ Room with a vibrant new lineup of humorous storytellers and comedians. Fresh, funny and fearless, these talented humorists shine a light on our modern foibles, large and small. Please join us for a delightful evening that showcases the Library’s lighter side. Refreshments and wine will be served.
This season’s event features Annabelle Gurwitch, C.S. Hanson, Henry Alford, and others to be announced.
Annabelle Gurwitch is an actress and author of four books including the New York Times bestseller I See You Made an Effort,also a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Her book Fired! became a Showtime comedy special. Annabelle has also written for the New Yorker, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and other publications. A former host of Dinner & a Movie on TBS, she was a regular contributor to NPR. In addition to numerous television appearances, she also enjoys a lively stage career. Her latest book is Wherever You Go, There They Are.
C.S. Hanson’s hilarious plays have been performed at the Cherry Lane, Theatre for the New City, NY Fringe Festival, among others, and in Miami, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh and Montreal. A Tennessee Williams Scholar at the 2010 Sewanee Writers’ Conference, she has received commissions from the Experimentals at LaMama and America-In-Play, where she was an Artist Associate. Here at the Library, her six-week workshop “The Art of the Ten-Minute Play” culminated in a vivacious reading by the participating writer/actors. Her latest work, TV in My Bones, was recently presented Off-Broadway by Tribe Players.
Henry Alford, the one and only “investigative humorist,” is an acclaimed funny man and journalist who has written for the New Yorker, the New York Times and Vanity Fair for two decades. Alford’s books include Would It Kill You to Stop Doing That?,about modern manners, and Big Kiss, which won a Thurber Prize for American Humor. His latest book, about dancing, And Then We Danced, was published in June.
Uptown at Night presents live storytelling and comedy on the Upper East Side; more information can be found at uptownatnight.org. Sydney LeBlanc, its founder and director, is a writer. Her books have been published by W.W. Norton and Rizzoli; her articles have appeared in the New York Times. She frequently reads her humorous short stories at Live from the Library.
