Urban Oasis: The Movement for City Parks

Now more than ever, parks are playing a vital role in our daily lives, especially in New York City. All over the city, from Central Park to smaller green spaces, parks offer respite from urban life, experiences of nature, and opportunities for exercise. How did these outdoor public spaces develop?

Join Marie Warsh, Central Park Conservancy Historian, and Jakub Gaweda, Education Specialist for Walking Tours at the Tenement Museum, to discuss the origins of New York City’s public parks and the movement that created them. We’ll explore the relationship between large parks such as Central Park and smaller neighborhood parks such as Seward Park on the Lower East Side, and how these parks have been shaped by and served the needs of immigrants.
