The struggle over globalization is perhaps the defining tension of our time, dividing those who believe in its promise and those who see mostly peril. Champions of globalization have promised a world of free trade, freedom of movement, and universally embraced liberal values. However, the past few years have seen a pushback from those who feel that a more globalized system has threatened their way of life. In many parts of the world, globalization’s opponents have framed the debate as a battle for the future that pits “us” vs. “them,” venting their fury at political, media, and corporate elites while supporting populist and nationalist politicians.

This debate is the centerpiece of a new book by Ian Bremmer, who joins the Hon. Kevin Rudd to explore how governments are responding to this global wave of populism. Where will that wave lead? How long might it last? Who will be the winners and losers in this climate? Join us for this special edition of the “Asia Briefing” series.

Ian Bremmer is President and Founder of the Eurasia Group, and the Harold J. Newman Distinguished Fellow in Geopolitics at the Asia Society Policy Institute. He also serves on the President’s Council of the Near East Foundation, the Leadership Council for Concordia, and the Board of Trustees of Intelligence Squared. He is the author of several books, and his latest is titled Us Vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism.

The Hon. Kevin Rudd (moderator) is inaugural President of the Asia Society Policy Institute. He served as 26th Prime Minister of Australia (2007 to 2010, 2013) and as Foreign Minister (2010 to 2012). He is a Distinguished Fellow at Chatham House and the Paulson Institute, and a Distinguished Statesman with the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is also a member of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization’s Group of Eminent Persons
