Vanitas, Fleeting Time, A Camera Obscura Workshop and Inquiry

With artist Amy-Claire Huestis: a glimpse through the 17th century eye.  Be fascinated as you look into the little screen of your own portable cameraobscura; this hands-on workshop provides a lively experience with history in a hands-on exploration of optical media used in Western European Painting.

The group considers the Vanitas, a genre of 17th century Dutch painting. These are  still-lifes of iconographically charged objects that tell a story of fleeting time, the transience of life, and vain desires of wealth and pleasure.Participants will each build their own working portable camera obscura, and assemble their own Vanitas still life from the library collection  skeletons, books, time keepers, oddities. Through the screens of the camera obscuras, the group will consider, view, and sketch the constructed scene. Archeological inquiry rather than traditional art historical lecture, this workshop gives an entry point in which to experience visually the possibilities of the past.
