It can be easy to think of the American Revolution as a conflict between the American colonies and Great Britain, with some assistance from the French. But Spain—through its alliance with France—also played a vital role in the outcome of the war, both through direct attacks on the British and through the supply of weapons and funds. Join historian Marie Arana to learn how Spain was involved in the colonies’ fight for independence, from 1776 to the siege of Yorktown, and their broader role in the Americas during this era of revolution.
Marie Arana served as the inaugural Literary Director of the Library of Congress and is the author of multiple prizewinning books, including LatinoLand: A Portrait of America’s Largest and Least Understood Minority and Silver, Sword, and Stone: Three Crucibles in the Latin American Story. David M. Rubenstein (moderator), co-founder and co-chairman of the Carlyle Group, is the host of History with David Rubenstein on PBS and the author of The Highest Calling: Conversations on the American Presidency, among other books.
