The New Look of an Old Neighborhood

This tour will examine highlights of Modern architecture and public art in the Financial District created from the 1960s through the 1980s. It will include two International Style masterworks by Pritzker Prize winner Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), One Chase Plaza, now 28 Liberty Street, and the former Marine Midland Bank Building. In addition to other Modern buildings designed by SOM, James Ingo Freed, and Emery Roth & Sons, we will visit Postmodern works from former modernists Kevin Roche and Philip Johnson. The tour will also include sculpture of Noguchi, Nevelson, Dubuffet and di Suvero. Join John Arbuckle, President of the New York/Tri-State Chapter of DOCOMOMO, an international organization dedicated to preserving Modern architecture, to explore Modernism and more where New York began.
