David Shapiro performing Wallace Shawn’s acclaimed one-person play THE FEVER
This stark and haunting play takes you on the unnamed character’s journey into a Third World country “where my language isn’t spoken”… He confronts how a life of comfort and joy —- his life — rests on a horrific global-social reality: exploitation, deprivation, and repression for billions on the planet. He gets “woke,” and it puts him in a fever state. And the audience is challenged to confront his dilemma. Whom to stand with: the privileged at the top, or the wretched of the earth?
American Theatre on THE FEVER: “… You can react to Shawn’s play in one of two ways — you can get angry, or you can reevaluate your life.”
For 25 years David Shapiro’s interpretation of this play has astonished audiences. Indeed, Wallace Shawn said, “I wish I could have done it like David did it.”
