This seminar will focus on two paintings by Jean-Antoine Watteau, whose name is synonymous with eighteenth-century French art. We will look at the Frick’s Portal of Valenciennes (c. 1710), a relatively early work depicting a military subject, and La Surprise (1718–19), a masterpiece of thefête galante and currently on loan to the museum from a private collection.
