With James M. McPherson, an American Civil War historian, and is the George Henry Davis '86 Professor Emeritus of United States History at Princeton University.

Although previously undervalued for their strategic impact because the represented only a small percentage of total forces, the Union and Confederate navies were crucial to the outcome of the Civil War. The author accounts the war's naval campaigns and their military leaders.
