Washington’s Farewell

On December 4, 1783, nine days after the last British soliders left American soil, General George Washington visited Fraunces Tavern. He invited his officers of the Continental Army to thank them for their service and to bid them farewell. After embracing each officer and wishing them well, Washington left for Annapolis, where he would resign his military commission before traveling on to Mount Vernon. The only first-hand account of this emotional goodbye comes from The Memoirs of Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge, which Fraunces Tavern Museum has on display in our collection

To commemorate Washington’s emotional farewell to his Officers that took place in the Long Room on December 4, 1783, a special reenactment of the farewell will occur throughout the day in the famous Long Room.

This year we are thrilled to welcome back Dan Shippey from the Breed’s Hill Institute, who served as the historical advisor and collaborator for actor Ian Kahn, who portrayed George Washington on the hit AMC series TURN: Washington’s Spies. Come and witness the toast given by George Washington on December 4, 1783 and get the chance to interact with “George,” himself!

We will also be welcoming William McIlhenny from the American Historical Theatre as Benjamin Tallmadge. See “Tallmadge” write his historic memoir, then visit the actual memoir upstairs in our gallery!
