While We Were Sleeping

Using poetic storytelling, While We Were Sleeping illuminates human rights abuses around the world. The show includes work by writers Tara Bracco, Philippe Javier GarcestoKarla Jackson-BrewerShane Michael ManieriShetal ShahNatalia Vargas-Caba, and Kesav Wable.

Performance will be followed by drinks and discussion.

Poetic People Power has been combining art and social change for 15 years. The group uses the expressive art of poetry to educate and engage audiences about timely social and political issues affecting our society. In this show, the group turns its attention to the injustices and human rights violations happening around the world including sex trafficking in NYC, government sanctioned killings in the Philippines, the food crisis in Venezuela, and the war on women’s bodies in the Congo.

This show premiered to a packed house at the International Human Rights Art Festival at Dixon Place in March, 2017.
