Whiskey Wars Tour and Tasting: “Irish Town”

Join BLDG 92 and Kings County Distillery for a tour and tasting that explores whiskey scandals of the past and the resurgence of the industry today in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Participants will learn about Vinegar Hill, the neighborhood directly west of the Yard known throughout the nineteenth century as “Irish Town,” and how this neighborhood full of countless illegal distilleries was the regular site of raids by Marine’s stationed at the Yard. The experience culminates in a tour of the City’s oldest whiskey distillery, Kings County Distillery, located onsite in the Yard’s former Paymaster Building (learn more about that on the tour!). As participants learn about the crafting of whiskey today a small tasting will also be provided from one of KCD’s whiskeys, bourbons or moonshines!

Kings County Distillery is New York City’s oldest, largest, and premier whiskey distillery, the first since prohibition. Founded in 2010, Kings County makes handmade moonshine, bourbon, and other whiskeys out of the 119-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Kings County uses New York grain and traditional distilling equipment to make distinctive spirits with several whiskeys earning numerous awards and was named Distillery of the Year in 2016 by the American Distilling Institute. Visitors are welcome every day to Kings County’s Gatehouse tasting room that located in the 1896 ceremonial entrance to the Brooklyn Navy yard on Navy Street (a great place to go after the tour!).
