Witches of Old New York

Did you miss our sold-out lecture in March? We’re bringing it back virtually on Zoom as a fundraiser to help QED reopen when they can. This lecture will be a special Mother’s Day edition, so you can share this in event virtually with your mom! You’ll receive a special link and password with your ticket purchase on the day of the event (or sooner).

On this talk, Marie Carter will take you on a journey back in time to learn about the women who were considered “witches” in pre-twentieth century New York. Learn about New York City’s only witch trial, and the witches who inhabited Broome Street (no joke here) and many other enclaves of downtown. These women were fortunetellers (and many were moms), and their practice allowed them to make money and maintain autonomy in their business practices. In this talk, you’ll become acquainted with the methods and lifestyles of these infamous “witches” and the men who tried to frame them.

Marie Carter is a writer, editor, and tour guide who hails from Scotland. She is a tour guide with Boroughs of the Dead, a macabre, strange and ghostly historical walking tour company. She designed and leads the tours “Haunting Histories and Legends of Astoria” and “Frights and Phantoms of Flushing.” She is also the author of The Trapeze Diaries and Holly’s Hurricane, a historical novel set in the future.

Please check out her tours at www.boroughsofthedead.com and writing at www.mariewritesandedits.com.
