Women’s Safety on Transit: Alternative Models to Policing

With public pressure mounting to eliminate police brutality, transit agencies in San Francisco and Los Angeles have started rethinking approaches to public safety within their systems. These responses must factor in the specific concerns women face on transit. A growing body of research shows that women who ride transit are more likely to experience harassment and favor a greater police presence.

What implications might the move to reallocate police funding have for women who ride transit? What are alternative models of public safety that prevent both the harassment of women and the criminalization of Black and brown transit riders?

Join us for a conversation about how women consider the role of policing on transit, and how agencies can create a more inclusive vision for public safety.

Panelists:
Scarlett De Leon, Organizing and Outreach Program Manager, Alliance for Community Transit – Los Angeles
Meghna Khanna, Senior Director, Countywide Planning & Development, LA Metro
