Church of the Heavenly Rest

Fifth Avenue at 90th Street

For the next few months we are welcoming some amazing poets to speak with us about the presence of the spirit in their work in a conversational interview, followed by Q&A, book signing and reception.

Books will be available for purchase to sign after each event, thanks to our partners at the Corner Bookstore, cornerbookstore.com

All events begin with a Reception at 6:30pm, Reading begins at 7:00pm.

Thursday February 25: J. Chester Johnson

We start our series with Poet Chester Johnson, who will read his published poetry and talk about his life and work, including, among other things, his writings on the American Civil Rights Movement (several of his writings on the subject now appear in the J. Chester Johnson Collection of the Civil Rights Archives at Queens College – NYC) and his work with W. H. Auden as the two poets on the drafting committee for the retranslation of the Psalms, which version is now contained in the current Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.

Upcoming Events:

March 10: MacKerrow Talcott “In Truth: Poems for Mary Magdalene”

The poems will be read by Ms. Talcott with accompanying scripture read by the Rev. Mark Bozzuti-Jones. “In Truth” was inspired by “The Meaning of Mary Magdalene” by Cynthia Bourgeault. Dr. Beourgeault has called the poems “small gems of shimmering insight.”

April 7: Fr. Spencer Reece

Fr. Spencer Reece, winner of the Bakeless Poetry Prize for his debut collection “The Clerk’s Tale” will read from his new anthology, “12 love poems from the murder capital of the world,” featuring work by the girls of Our Little Roses orphanage in Honduras. In addition to the reading there will be a screening from part of the documentary about the girls of Our Little Roses, as well as readings from other works.Poetry1
