WORKac: We’ll Get There When We Cross That Bridge

Please join us on May 29th to celebrate the art (and architecture) of collaboration. The playful, colorful architecture of WORKac, the company named the #1 design firm in the US by ARCHITECT magazine in 2017, is itself a collaborative business. Founders Amale Andraos and Dan Wood join book designer Neil Donnelly to discuss their experiences in bookmaking. Monacelli Press editor Alan Rapp will moderate a discussion that is sure to be as lively and complex as the firm’s work. Copies of WORKac: We’ll Get There When We Cross That Bridge will be available for purchase and signing after the conversation.

WORK Architecture Company (WORKac) was founded in 2003 by Amale Andraos and Dan Wood. WORKac was named the #1 design firm in the US by Architect Magazine in 2017 and was the 2015 AIA NYS Firm of the Year. WORKac has achieved international acclaim for projects such as the Edible Schoolyard at P.S. 216 in Brooklyn, the Public Library for Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, and the Stealth Building in New York.

Amale Andraos is Dean of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and a Principal of WORKac. Andraos has taught at numerous institutions including Princeton, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and the American University in Beirut. Her work has recently explored the question of representation by re-examining the concept of the ‘Arab City.’ Andraos was born in Beirut, Lebanon. She has lived in Saudi Arabia, France, Canada, and the Netherlands prior to moving to New York in 2002. Andraos serves on the board of the Architectural League of New York.

Dan Wood, FAIA, LEED AP, leads international projects for WORKac ranging from masterplans to buildings across the United States as well as in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Wood held the 2017 Frank Gehry Chair at the University of Toronto, the 2013-14 Louis I. Kahn Chair at the Yale School of Architecture and has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, the Cooper Union, Columbia, Ohio State University, and UC Berkeley, where he was the Friedman Distinguished Chair. Wood serves at the Vice President for Design Excellence of AIA New York.

Neil Donnelly works in graphic design across media with clients in art, architecture, publishing, and public service. His clients include cultural and educational institutions such as the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, and Columbia University, publishers such as Phaidon, Verso, Princeton Architectural Press, and The New York Times, and organizations including the NYC Department of Transportation and the Center for Urban Pedagogy. His work has been included in the Brno Biennial of Graphic Design and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Gwangju Design Biennale, the New Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.

Alan Rapp is senior editor at The Monacelli Press, where he acquires and develops books on architecture, design, art, and photography. As a writer, he has contributed to numerous magazines, including Modern Painters, The Photobook Review, and Domus, and has contributed essays to books published by Gestalten, Phaidon, and Steidl. As an instructor, he has led thesis seminars, design writing courses, and photography book workshops at Rhode Island School of Design, Pratt Institute, and the Center for Photography at Woodstock.
