Workshop: Donna Kaz, Turn Your Attitude to Action

Address issues affecting you within your community, in the nation, or across the globe in this 2½-hour poster-making workshop with author/activist Donna Kaz of Guerrilla Girls/Guerrilla Girls on Tour. The workshop begins with a discussion of what makes a good piece of protest art and the evolution and philosophy behind some of the Guerrilla Girls’ and Guerrilla Girls On Tour’s most famous posters and streat theater actions. Participants move on to forming small groups to work collaboratively on creating a new poster. Works in progress are presented and discussed, and the workshop ends with a planning session that walks participants through the process of distributing their new visual works. Topics in this workshop include the art of collaboration and how to gather statistics, generate ideas, fund projects, ensure response, and guarantee momentum. Turn Your Attitude to Action also sheds light on the use of storytelling to weave together the fabric of a movement designed to effect change. For anyone with an interest or passion for combining activism and art.

Donna Kaz is a leading feminist voice in the nation on how to combine activism and art. For the past 20 years she has led the touring activist troupe Guerrilla Girls On Tour around the world with talks focused on how to create plays, performances and visual works which address violence against women, pay equity, reproductive rights, discrimination in the performing arts and the intersection of feminism and comedy. In 2016 her memoir, UN/MASKED: Memoirs of a Guerrilla Girl On Tour (Skyhorse, 2016), was named best nonfiction prose book of 2017 by the Devils Kitchen Literary Fest. She has written for and been featured by media outlets including Ms. Magazine, Bust, The Sun, Mother Jones, NPR, Alternet, and Lilith. Her plays and performances have been produced at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Harlem Stage, Trinity College/Dublin, and Lincoln Center. For her work creating activist art she has received the Yoko Ono Courage Award for the Arts, among other honors. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte and currently serves as the program director for the Sag Harbor Creative Nonfiction Writers Conference.
