Is the World Our Big & Exciting Partner?

Children ages 5-12 will be looking at the question “Is the World Our Big & Exciting Partner?” in the Learning to Like the World class of Saturday, May 20th. The class takes place from 11 AM to 12:15 PM at the Aesthetic Realism Foundation, a not-for-profit educational foundation, and is taught by consultants Barbara Allen and Robert Murphy.

In this class, boys and girls will enjoy and learn from a wonderful play, The Inside & Outside of Winnington Snail, by poet Martha Baird.  It’s about a young snail who is stuck-up—Winnington doesn’t like the other animals in the garden, and the other animals know it!  And the children will have a terrific time as Ms. Allen and Mr. Murphy talk about sentences that make clear what the play, and our own lives, are about: these sentences from the chapter “The World,” in the book Children’s Guide to Parents and Other Matters.  They’re by Eli Siegel, the American poet and educator and founder of the philosophy Aesthetic Realism:

“The world is your partner, whatever your mind may do….People don’t feel good when they’re not getting along with other things.  When Ted feels bad he is in some not so good arrangement with his big, big, big partner….Wherever you are, in bed or out, the world will be about you.  If you get along well with it, you will be some citizen.”

At this delightful children’s activity, youngsters will learn that their deepest desire is to honestly know and like the world and people.  And they’ll happily learn that the means to like the world honestly is in this principle stated by Mr. Siegel: “The world, art, and self explain each other: each is the aesthetic oneness of opposites.”  Every child attending will feel invigorated and kinder!
