Join Matthew Baker, in conversation with Paris Review editor Emily Nemens, for the publication of WHY VISIT AMERICA.
Named by Variety as one of ’10 Storytellers to Watch’, Matthew Baker – the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships including the Fulbright Commission and MacDowell Colony – is one of the most exciting, new voices in literary fiction. Why Visit America is a collection of 13, interconnected stories, eight of which have already been hotly contested and optioned for TV and film.
The 13 stories, one for each stripe of the American flag, range in style from utopia to horror, noir mystery to Western. As well as journeying through fictional style, the stories travel the length and breadth of the USA, including every state, naming over 100 towns and cities, and providing us, Matthew Baker hopes, with a travel guide to America and its culture.
Emily Nemens is a writer, illustrator, and editor. Her debut novel, The Cactus League, was published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in February 2020 to critical acclaim. In 2018 Nemens became the seventh editor of the Paris Review, the nation’s preeminent literary quarterly.
