Zooming in on Veteran Trees: Preserving Our Elders

New York City’s natural history is reflected in some of its oldest living organisms: its trees. We refer to those trees that have endured the pressures of human development— and have the scars to show for it—as veteran trees. Some of these veteran trees at Green-Wood date back to the Cemetery’s founding in 1838 or earlier and are remnants of the legacy of Brooklyn’s old-growth forests. These specimens require a unique approach to tree care, one that seeks to consider a tree’s natural aging processes. Join world-class arborist and veteran tree care specialist Philip Kelley and Green-Wood’s Director of Horticulture Joseph Charap for a presentation and conversation on how and why we seek to preserve our veteran trees.

We’d love to continue to provide programming like this during the COVID crisis. Please support our work with a contribution of any size.

Free, RSVP required. This conversation is part of our new series of virtual programs about the horticulture and wildlife of Green-Wood, Zooming in on Nature.

Zoom link will be emailed to you the day of the program, please arrive early to test your connection.
