“A Journey through Brunei’s Postal System from 1895 ” with Claire Scott

Brunei’s national poem Syair “Awang Semaun” tells how this small country situated on the island of Borneo was founded by fourteen saudara (brothers and first cousins). Some say they were sons of Dewa Amas of Kayangan, a super being who descended to earth at Ulu Limbang in an egg. The postal system in Brunei is equally as magical. The Spanish sought to invade Brunei but were beaten back with the help of the English. In 1895, the first Brunei post office was established … but nothing is ever easy.

Join the British Empire Study Group (BESG) for the start of our 2024 program year on January 11th at 6 pm ET when we host Claire Scott, Kumala Indera, when she takes us on – “A Journey through Brunei’s Postal System from 1895”.
