Beauty, Memory, Unity: An Ancient and New Understanding of Beauty

Note: This event will be offered online. Sessions of all our online programs will be recorded and shared with registrants after each is completed for a limited time only.

Our culture is deeply in need of a fresh understanding of the beauty that can provide a pathway out of the alienation, anxiety, and intentional ugliness of modernism. In this evening’s presentation, architect Steve Bass will introduce a philosophy of beauty that draws on the legacy of Pythagoras, Plato and later Neo-Platonists.

In this view, number and geometry are endowed with qualitative, harmonic, life-like properties. Steve’s new book, which gives this talk its title, has been acclaimed as the most important new work on beauty in a quarter of a century.

It draws on elements of classical and renaissance architecture from Vitruvius to Palladio, as well as ancient philosophy, or love of wisdom, that can provide an important wellspring to renew our culture and revive the connection of beauty to the good and the true.
