“Beneath the Battlefield”
The Battle of Gettysburg is a highlight of many textbooks but the stories beneath the history can only be uncovered through examination of original documents from the battlefield itself. Gettysburg remains the bloodiest battle in our nation’s history. Confederate and Union forces fought for three days in a battle that proved in hindsight to be the turning point of the Civil War. However it is the unknown struggles within the larger epic that can bring us greater understanding of this pivotal moment.
Join the Obscura Society as we explore this moment in history through original documents from the Gilder Lehrman Collection. Curators will provide us with special access and demonstrate the methods used to transcribe Civil War era script. With these historic documents at hand we will immerse ourselves in the horror and glory of one of the great turning points in history. We’ll continue the conversation with the curators over wine and cookies to wrap up this very special visit to a rare and revealing archive.
