Garrard Conley: Boy Erased

Garrard Conley, author of “Boy Erased,” joins us at The Center to share his memoir of his harrowing experience of gay conversion therapy. Garrard, the son of a Baptist pastor and deeply involved in church life in Arkansas, was conflicted about his gayness. At 19, he was forced to either attend a church-supported gay conversion therapy program to “cure” him of his homosexuality, or lose his family, friends and God. He chose the 12-Step Program heavy on Bible study to emerge ex-gay, cleansed of impure urges and stronger in his faith for God. Spoiler alert: It didn’t work. But this is only part of his story. At times heart-breaking, at times triumphant, this memoir is a testament to love that survives despite all odds.
