Discussion begins at 8:30 AM
While China’s meteoric rise often dominates conversations about Asia’s emerging global powers, India’s explosive economic growth has vaulted it into the ranks of the world’s fastest-growing nations. India has the world’s third largest military and is taking on a more prominent role on regional and global issues. Today, India’s leaders increasingly expect to see their country treated accordingly. 2018 marks a crucial year for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ahead of 2019 elections, as his government presses a reform program and further enhances its engagement across the Indo-Pacific.
Join us for a look at the year ahead for India and how its trajectory and policies will impact the U.S., Asia, and the world. The discussion will feature Alyssa Ayres, Council on Foreign Relations Senior Fellow and author of the forthcoming book Our Time Has Come: How India is Making Its Place in the World, and Bobby Ghosh, former Editor-in-Chief of the Hindustan Times.
Alyssa Ayres is Senior Fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations. Previously, she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia from 2010 to 2013. She was the founding director of the India and South Asia practice at McLarty Associates. She is the author and co-editor of several books—her latest, Our Time Has Come: How India is Making Its Place in the World, will be published in January 2018.
Bobby Ghosh most recently served as Editor-in-Chief of the Hindustan Times. Previously, he was the Managing Editor for Quartz, having joined the organization after 16 years at TIME magazine. Before TIME, he worked at the Far Eastern Economic Review in Hong Kong, BusinessWorld magazine in Mumbai and New Delhi, the Business Standard in Kolkata, and the Deccan Chronicle in Visakhapatnam, India.
Tom Nagorski (moderator) is Executive Vice President of Asia Society. He joined the Asia Society following a three-decade career in journalism—having served most recently as Managing Editor for International Coverage at ABC News.
