Jesuits and Jedi Episode II: The Dominicans Strike Back

Join us as we return to “a galaxy far, far away” for a lively discussion about philosophy, faith and the Force. A follow up to last season’s hugely popular Jesuits & Jedi event, the evening will feature author Fr. Humbert Kilanowski, O.P. and SIRIUS XM radio host Fr. John Maria Devaney, O.P. as they explore questions about good and evil and meaning and morality through the lens of the Star Wars film franchise.

Fr. Humbert Kilanowski, O.P. is a priest of the Dominican Order and a professor of mathematics at Providence College in Rhode Island.  He hails from Columbus, Ohio, where he earned a doctorate in mathematics at The Ohio State University, and also holds degrees in astronomy and theology.  Fr. Humbert served as a deacon at St. Joseph’s Church in Greenwich Village and was ordained a priest in 2018.

Fr. John Maria Devaney, O.P., would not exactly call a vocation to religious life and ordination to the priesthood a “success story” but a sublime invitation offered by God to a man of woman.  The words of St. Theresa of Calcutta can also come to mind: “God does not ask to be successful but faithful.”  After graduating Emerson College in Boston, with a major in communications with a concentration in audio/radio, he worked at public radio stations in WERS 88.9FM Boston, MA  91.9FM Hackettstown, NJ, and lastly at KKJZ 88.1FM Los Angeles, CA.  He began to discern his vocation to the priesthood and consecrated life around the death of Pope St. John Paul II.  After meeting the Order of Preachers (commonly know as “The Dominicans” named after St. Dominic who founded them in 1216) in New York City in 2006.  He entered the novitiate of the Province of St. Joseph, during the summer of 2008 where he received the habit making his solemn profession of vows to live the rest of his life as a friar in the Order of Preachers.  He was ordained in 2014 and is stationed at the Priory of St. Vincent Ferrer on the upper east of Manhattan where the Dominican Friars have had a presence for almost 150 years.  His broadcast experience has brought him in the efforts of the new evangelization to host a one hour national weekly show on SiriusXM Satellite Radio’s 129 The Catholic Channel entitled Word to Life on Friday’s from 1-2PM EST.
