ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Joseph Meloy is perhaps best known for his bright and colorful abstract murals that can be found across the city, particularly in the Lower East Side, where they shine into the streetscape like post-graffiti stained glass. But things may be looking a little different since the last time you’ve seen him. While he has maintained a presence in the gallery circuit since 2011, on May 15th, Meloy will be unveiling his first solo show in 3 years at The Living Gallery Outpost in the East Village, with a collection of new works that expand his visual language of markmaking into new directions, and allow bits and pieces of figuration back into his creative mix. “I think I’ve grown a lot as an artist and now I’m at a point where I’m bringing together the different styles I’ve developed, and I’m not afraid to experiment with things I’m not necessarily known for. My work is what I decide it is..” Come experience the new collection in person and open your mind to analyzing the mysterious energy behind it.

Born and raised in New York City, Meloy has always drawn inspiration from the city’s erratic and eclectic energy. Bold and chaotic lines jump across the canvas in competition and balance with each other, underpinned by an underlying, internal structure of control, not unlike the feeling one gets when navigating the streets of Manhattan. “While I do think that some of these new paintings venture into the world of more traditional narrative, I’m still most interested in channeling energy and recording my compositions in spontaneous, improvised bursts. I was actually as surprised as anyone to see these figures take shape the way they did!”
