‘Meet the Presidents: A Look at the American Presidency’ Webinar

How have American presidents interpreted, and fulfilled, their leadership role since George Washington took the oath of office in 1789? How has the job of president adapted to a more interconnected global society? What challenges lie ahead for our system of checks and balances? It’s time to explore how the American presidential roles, responsibilities, and duties have grown over time to meet the needs of an ever-changing nation, and world.

Join New York Adventure Club and New-York Historical Society as we trace the evolution of the American presidency and executive branch over the past 250 years, and what changes could be in store for future presidents.

Led by New-York Historical Society Docent Stephanie Nigito, our virtual experience surrounding the American presidency will include:

  • An in-depth look at the evolution of the American presidency, and how different occupants of the White House have used their authority
  • Case studies of how particular presidents like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson used their power to further define constitutional roles
  • A discussion surrounding the institutions and laws that govern our system, and why Congress or the Supreme Court has had to check presidential authority at times
  • Highlighting rare objects and artifacts from the Meet the Presidents exhibition currently on view at the New-York Historical Society, from the actual Bible used during George Washington’s inauguration in 1789 to a student scrapbook from 1962 chronicling John F. Kennedy’s leadership during the Cuban Missile Crisis

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Stephanie — any and all questions about the American presidency are welcomed and encouraged!
